Here is ebay's explaination of a private auction:
What is a Private Auction?

When a seller chooses to make an auction private, the User IDs of bidders is not displayed on the listing. The seller is able to view the User ID of only the high bidder during the listing, and only the winning bidder when the listing ends. In a Buy It Now listing, Private Auction hides the identity of the buyer from everyone except the seller.

The only reason I can think of as to why someone would want hid the bidders from everyone is because maybe the seller doesn't want anyone emailing the bidders to let them know the new solids are in the stores for less money [Confused] That's the only explaination I can come up with.
