I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but at least one seller is posting an image that shows the solid AND a box, then in the description says the box is not available, she is using a stock photo. I was almost deceived, so thought I would post this warning.

It's the same "member" here who is selling the "filled" compacts along with the "refills." What a joke.

I feel so sorry for those who do not know this site exists...and are unwittingly walking into a fraudulent experience.

"But as we know from waiting for EL to do something about the warehouse sales, they really dont care. It is actually EL that is sabotaging the collectors isnt it?"

No...quite frankly, it's you, dear.

Hi all :)

Wow this has been an interesting read!! There has been some really valid points made on here.

In my personal view the best thing to do is always check when you are buying a "full" solid that it has the original scent inside. With these perfumes being made available to anyone to use, then it is very likely that there are more warehouse full solids than we think. It's just something else to be vigilant on.

I don't mind warehouse solids too much as I do have some, I haven't always got the money to buy perfection everytime!! However, in my mind a warehouse is a warehouse is a warehouse. What's the point in trying to dress it up as anything else. The only point is to make money. I wouldn't bother filling my warehouse solids because I've plenty of other solids that I can stick my nose into and have a good smell, so the peolpe who do are doing it for profit and profit only. Like I said, it's probably a lot more widespread thesedays than we think.

All sellers are never going to be upfront all of the time, but at least this discussion has brought out the problem, and enabled us to make a educated decision when we are buying full solids. That's probably the best we can hope for. Let's face it nothing is going to be done about the problem. :(

Please read all the way to the end.

First of all I would like to tell you all that I am NOT selling anything. My sister sells on Ebay and yes! She is selling the solid perfume refills. As for all the people who had something to say ........
1. It isn't anyone's business, just don't buy the refills if you don't want them.

2. It is allowed to sell homemade solid perfume and use the name Estee Lauder in the title and description on Ebay. Look at the rules if you think you know so much instead of saying someone is doing something wrong.

3. The compacts being sold ARE NOT filled with the homemade solid. It is available in the refills only AND 99% of the people who bought them are buying them to wear the fragrance.

4. If you think she is the only one doing this you are WRONG! Where do you think she got the idea and the instructions to make them ....... ESTY of course. So this means she is not the first nor the last that will be making solid perfumes with scents that people want.

5. We are in America (even though many of you aren't) and in America we have the right to free enterprise. This means she can sell what she wants as long as it isn't illegal.

Now lets take a look back in time to some of the posts from this site. Very interesting I think. A very accomplished collector saying she can make estee lauder refills!

Posted 15 October 2008 - 11:24 AM It's been over 3 years since I've actively collected the Estee solids. I have been very busy, but I have to admit, I am disgusted by what I see on Ebay and Estee Lauder's apparent lack of compassion towards their collectors. I get the new Harrod's Bear each year and that's about it with few exceptions. As for the empty solids on Ebay, I know how to make solid perfume and can make something that is pretty close to what they do.

Also, I opened up some of the solids I bought just from the past 3 years and all of the black rubbery lettering (inside the compacts that goes over the "Estee Lauder" stamp) is coming off! How do you like that?

I say the heck with EL! The people running the company obviously didn't share EL's idea of customer service!

I love what you're doing with this site for collectors and have met so many nice people to share ideas and collect with. You'd think EL would have thought of it first but they're too busy making money to care about their devoted collectors.
===============================================================

This is just my personal opinion and probably it has all been said many times before but perhaps it would be better if the stores flooded the market with E L compacts rather than the empty factory versions that appear on ebay, at least that way we would have the pouches and boxes? Yes, if a compact is rare then I will purchase it without a box or perfume until the opportunity comes along for me to buy one complete with perfume and boxes. Estee Lauder Company please note: while companies such as Neiman Marcus and Saks are pushing the exclusivity of your compacts and the CC stores are limiting the number of compacts we collectors can purchase, ebay is flooded with empty Estee Lauder compacts being sold for a fraction of the price, thus destroying their value. Sheer hypocrisy!
If Estee Lauder was alive she would be shocked and disappointed at the way her company is being run today.

Hey everyone, Donna from Bergdorf's called me today to say the new solids are in and I told her I'm waiting for the cheapies that will flood Ebay soon. She said she's hearing that alot. I bet!
We can only hope EL hears something, but I really thing we're a drop in the bucket as far as sales go so we'll never matter to them. It's their loss. We'll just buy the solids on Ebay and bypass EL altogether.
I still love my solids but I won't pay full price anymore.

What do you mean by "legitimate seller?" Will they rip you off? Probably not. They're being honest in their advertising. They probably got the solids from the factory or a warehouse sale. In fact, one seller states the solids were obtained direct from the factory. I wouldn't want it without the box and perfume (unless it was an appealing prototype) but someone else might. It's a personal preference that we've discussed on this site many times.

Just a curious question for you all. There are several postings lately in eBay for Jay Strongwater (and other) solids that have never been filled with perfume before. Do you think these are legitimate sellers? If so, how did they come by them? It's odd too that they don't have boxes, only the bag. Doesn't seem on the up and up, but maybe some of you have insight.

I will NOT be buying anymore from the EL Stores-The Pink Lady is my last one- I will only buy them from eBay or other collectors from now on- At this point I don't care if they have scent in them or not- I have enough to make my display case smell good- I collect them for their look- not their scent-

Posted 21 February 2008 - 10:51 PM I would clean it out since you aren't interested in the contents anyway. I don't really see where dried old used perfume adds to the quality of the piece. When I buy them MIB I leave it inside, but if old and yucky I prefer to clean them out. I think it's strictly a matter of personal preference. I've bought several that are empty and it doesn't bother me at all. Truthfully, when I have seen the empty boxless solids on Ebay, I'm going to buy. I really don't think a box is worth $150-200 more for a solid, when all anyone sees is the solid in the curio cabinet anyway. My big ticket solids are MIBB, but since solids don't seem to be holding their value these days, I'm going boxless if I can get a bargain.

A word to my friend Petals who often emails me privately.
I think I will look through my emails so I can post the conversation.

It must have been 3 months ago or more that you first saw the refills on Ebay. You never said a word on this site and as a matter of fact you emailed me privately to tell me not to mention them on the site. Why was that? And why now is it so important? I think as you have said it is because you think these refills are going to make YOUR collection less valuable. I must tell you that if the compacts are losing value it is not because of my sister. It is because of the warehouse empties. it seems after re-reading ALL the post on this site that this has been an issue for years. You (the collectors) have not been able to stop it with all your letters and calls to Estee Lauder. Even though the compacts my sister is selling are not filled with the homemade perfume; since everyone believes they are here is a little bit of news. Since buying empty warehouse solids is bringing down your collections then you shouldn't be buying the empties either or the ones without box as a matter of fact. So what are you worried about if your not buying them.

It seems to me that everyone that is upset over thinking that empty compacts are being filled and then sold must be buying them. In which case they are making your collection value go down. by just the fact of buying these (unboxed) warehouse compacts in the first place. I surely hope you take just as much anger out on them as you have on me and my sister.

For Zooey:
Yes I thought you were my friend is right. How many PM messages have we exchanged to speak about going to warehouse sales. Lets be truthful here. You expressed alot of interest in going to one of the sales. Are you going to tell me is you saw a rare compact there that you wouldn't have purchased it for $25? I really doubt that.

For MitziMay:
I must say you are the only one here who has been consistent about not wanting to buy any compact unless it is MIB. Bravo to you! Although in your post earlier (shown above) you did say that you would buy a rare one without perfume or box if it came along. So are you saying that if the same rare one came along that had by chance been filled with a refill that you wouldn't buy it? I mean really, what is the difference? You could just scrape the perfume out and it would be empty and without box ..... correct?

I know this is a long post but feel that I must say my peace.

No one is hurting your collections except Estee Lauder as I have said before. If they didn't let the compacts out of the warehouse none of these conversations would be happening. Nor would they have for years. Don't blame anyone out there for taking the initiative to make a dollar. They don't have to be your dollars. If true collections are so important to you then stick to the MIB ones.

The solid perfumes made by my sister ARE Estee Lauder perfumes. They are just put into a solid base. They are not fakes. They may not be knock you on the floor strong, but who wants to wear that anyway. The compacts all smell like Old Lady, except maybe the Pleasures and Beautiful.

And the pictures that say from file ...... are from our file. We took pictures of every compact we have had in the house. Why should I keep taking pictures over again when I have them already. The description is there to be read. Do you always shop by picture alone? There is NO deception!

One last statement.
I feel you have all turned on me, when you have been nice to in the past. Perhaps the niceness was not sincere. I really don't care and I really don't need to post. I was enjoying the interacting stories but can live without any of it.

I actually belong to the site for the information. Which is why I was upset when it was going to shut down. I really do collect compacts and I really did have a family member that worked in the factory so I never had a MIB one. I happen to think they are pretty which is why I collect them. I buy them full, empty who cares. Im not selling my collection. They remind me of my sister that died.

I hope everyone enjoys their collections and the memories they bring. Those that hope to be rich one day from the price rising higher and higher ..... more power to you. Now go back and read why you collect. Not one of you said to make money on the value in the future.

Im finished.

You're absolutely right, girl. I did express curiosity in the Warehouse Sales...but I never went, did I.

And please do not ever speculate on what anyone would or would not do. "Expressing Interest" is a lot different from actually doing the deed. It's a short trip from here to NY, and it's one I have no desire to take.

nysizzle, I had no idea who the seller of the homemade solid perfume was, nor the seller of the compacts that show a box in the photo and are sold without it. Yes, I agree with you that EL is the true source of the solid values plummeting. Whether someone buys a warehouse solid or not is a personal choice. The true instigator is EL for flooding inferior or empty pieces and demonstrating little regard for their retail customers. It is the fault of EL that they are in the marketplace and not the resellers. And I said before, I would go to a sale if I could get in, but I would prefer that NOBODY have this opportunity! I have purchased empties when I was unable to collect MIB, which I prefer because I DO hope someday they will have greater value -- again, my choice.

However, I do not feel in the least guilty about warning my fellow collectors about my experiences with unscrupulous sellers. And I am very grateful they are making me aware of other issues - such as the sale of compacts refilled with DOCTORED UP solid perfume. I am so disillusioned with people who are not honest. I just want sellers to be upfront about what they are selling.

You said: "And the pictures that say from file ...... are from our file. We took pictures of every compact we have had in the house. Why should I keep taking pictures over again when I have them already. The description is there to be read. Do you always shop by picture alone? There is NO deception!" IN MY OPINION IT IS DECEPTIVE. The purpose of a photo is to show an image of the item being sold. If the box isn't for sale, DON'T SHOW IT!.

I think your rant on people who corresponded privately with you is in poor taste. I am glad I was not one of them.

Ar,
Thank you for being honest in your reply. The fact that I spoke about someone who corresponded to me privately is because it really needs to be shown that there are two-faced people in the world. Im sorry you think it in poor taste but I think it is poor taste to know about something before it happens and not say a word and then make out like you are the compact police when someone mentions it. Why play both sides is the question.

As I said the compacts being sold as full were purched that way, they were not doctored.

I have also bumped up two topics where homemede refills were being used long before this and no one on the site said anything about it.

Thank you, AR. Very well put.

Now...can we stop nit-picking, name calling, etc. and get on with life? Sell whatever you want. If you can live with it, fine. We will buy from wherever and whomever we like, but our choices have narrowed and we will now be a teensy bit more inquisitive before bidding on eBay or buying from etsy.

This has certainly been a learning experience...

Be well...play nice...don't run with scissors...be HONEST.

Welcome to the site!

Ooooo... I would love to go and actually see what a EL warehouse sale is like... one day.... and yep.... I would buy empty solids and yes.. I would sell them... like I have some up for sale now... I actually got 14 pieces that I didn't have already in my collection and it made me very, very excited!

I want to have a place where collectors can buy solids for their collections if they don't have them at all... don't like it than hey, don't buy them... simple...

I would rather have an empty solid than not have the solid at all.... and if I can at some point replace it with a MIB solid.... that's just me though.... everyone has their own ways on how they collect.... but no one is right and no one is wrong...

I don't think the actual empty compacts are counterfeits... the work involved in casting the mold, enameling and hand setting the stones would cost way too much to go and turn around and sell the compact for $5

Like I stated we all have different opinions on how we like to collect.... please let's not get all worked up over our differences...

Thanks

I have stayed out of this post from the start because I could see it was going to get nasty.

However, I have to say I TOTALLY agree with Lisa on this one, and was thinking of a way to say this myself without treading on my 'friends' toes because I might disagree with their point of view or think it's come across too strong.

In the future it'd be nice just to state your opinion only without pointing the finger at anyone and getting angry and nasty. We have already lost a few mates on this site by venting our disagreements like this in the past.

I understand people are passionate about certain things, and because I know them on the site, I can still stay good friends with them despite differences.

We can all read between the lines, and there is the use of personal messenger on here so you don't have to publicly humiliate people to perhaps regret it later.

Personally, I prefer to buy MIB, and also I do appreciate the fact that this topic was brought up so I could also be enlightened to things I didn't know before.

Thank you Zooey, Petals, Nyslzzle, MitzyMay for all the major input - I think we can all make up our own minds now as to where we want to go with this.

And THANKS to jeansdreamsforever for offering instant access to the warehouse sales !!!

Welcome, Jeansdreams! Amazing timing!!

Thought I posted this but it did not show up. That's what happens when one "Previews" one's post, then forgets to "Add Reply."

Anyway, as far as I know and from what I've read on other sites (and as discussed with nys in pm's...just to keep all informed) the Warehouse Sales sell lots more than Solids. All the brands Estee Lauder carries supposedly are sold there. Cosmetics, I suppose, top the list. Have no idea if perfumes are available, but they probably are. And no, I cannot name the brands as that would jeopardize this site. Suffice to say they are all inherent to Estee Lauder.

Am I curious as to what the sales are like? Absolutely. Do I really want to go? Haven't given it any thought in ages but probably not. Do I want empty solids. No. But that's just me.

Regardless...the Warehouse Sales are here to stay. We can debate them forever but everyone will have a different opinion. I'm just putting it all out of my head right now.

'nite again.... :)

MY REPLY:

Yes, I have written to you in the past (have not had a chance to catch up on all the posts as I have been away from the site and I need to re-read).....

But, I think you have not re=read whatever you keep on file!!!!!!!!

We do write now and then as you are involved with the stories we write and I ALSO HAVE THE EMAILS WHICH YOU HAVE SENT TO ME EXPLAINING MORE ABOUT THE WAREHOUSE SALES. YOU ALSO HELPED WITH THE FACTUAL INFORMATION BY INCLUDING THEM IN THE STORIES!

You state I knew about the Refills being sold on Ebay and contacted you.

WRONG!

I was not aware of the refills. THERE HAS BEEN TOO MUCH GOING ON IN MY LIFE AND DUE TO THIS I HAVE NOT BEEN BOTHERING MUCH WITH EBAY. Not that I bother checking out individual auctions unless I am interested in purchasing something which has been listed.

YOU WROTE TO ME telling me you had the refills and were selling them and asked me whether you should post that on the solid perfume site. I wrote back and said I did not think that was a good idea. At that point I had not even checked out your auctions nor did I know what was involved with what you were selling! Had I known then what was involved, my answer to you when you asked the question as to whether you should let the collectors know, would have been more involved.

a) I have allergies too and know darn well that you cannot tamper/doctor perfumes and then sell them
to the general public.

B) A friend of mine who lives in the States has spent a fortune trying to produce and market shampoos etc. She used to send me details of the problems she was experienceing and the money it was costing her to do this. Also the standards required and the laws involved. I may well write to her as she also collects the odd solid.

..................

I still have to re-read all the posts AS I have been out of London for the last 24 plus hours, BUT at least I do know also what I wrote in reply to your question re the refills, and also the fact that I had NOT read how these refills were being made etc.

Please pass on my wishes to your sister.

Let EL Execs eat it big time maybe they might have to let one of their servants or maids go when we all boycott!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh nooooooooooo

Mark has left the room!!

In reply to your personal question to me, yes I would buy a rare compact empty ONLY if I knew it's source, i.e. if possible knowing where the seller bought the compact and that traces of the original perfume remain. No way would I buy a warehouse reject compact empty or refilled or even a perfect compact that contains a homemade or tampered with refill irrespective of how rare the compact is! There is a principle here, can you not see it?
